Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

The Frat Pack is the name for a group of actors who have appeared in numerous films together. These appearances are often in supporting or cameo roles, and the films share an absurdist sense of humor. The Frat Pack consists of Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Owen and Luke Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Carell.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

John C. Reilly to Walk Hard
Source: Variety
August 10, 2006

Columbia Pictures has acquired the comedy pitch Walk Hard, which Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan will write and produce as a vehicle for John C. Reilly. Kasdan will direct.

Variety says the story is about fictional music legend Dewey Cox, whose life becomes as messy as the protagonists in Ray and Walk the Line, films that inspired the comedy. Reilly, who has sung and played harmonica in blues bands, last sang onscreen in Chicago.

"It's an idea Jake had after seeing one too many musical biopics and feeling it was time to have some fun with that," Reilly said. "My character is an amalgamation of a number of classic musician stories, tales of excess, highs and lows and bad behavior."

Production begins early next year.

First of all, the a comedic twist on biopics is brilliant. Also, Reilly was hilarious in Talladega Nights (great enough for McKay & Ferell to work with him again.) Maybe this role will take his career to the next level as a comedic lead.

I don't think a Will Ferrell cameo would be out of the question in this project.

I like this one! They better be careful about making any jokes at the expense of Cash, though. Us Cash fans are rabid.

Haha, Defamer kinda inducted Reilly into the Frat Pack (aka "The New Gay Mafia")

· John C. Reilly is officially inducted into comedy's New Gay Mafia by landing a second starring project in a week following Talladega Nights, this time hooking up with Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan for Walk Hard, a spoof of musical biopics like Ray and Walk the Line. [Variety]

I guess Slacker Pack isn't such a bad name. Compared to New Gay Mafia that is (note: Defamer claims "gay" is used in the old-world way (funny!) as opposed to the new world gay (Homo!).).

Oh, hey, John C. Reilly is in Chicago right now filming the movie "Quebec". My daguhter & I are both extras on Thursday. We're "grocery shoppers". I'm pretty sure that John C. Reilly will be in this scene, and Seann William Scott as well. It was supposed to shoot today, but Seann hurt himself over the weekend and today's shoot got pushed back to Thursday. Can't wait to see how he is in person!

How to Walk Hard

If you’re like me, you think the idea of a parody of musical biopics that is written and produced by friends and frequent collaborators Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan (and directed by Kasdan, known for helming ZERO EFFECT and ORANGE COUNTY) and starring John C. Reilly is about the most exciting thing there is. Thus is the premise of the upcoming WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY, which you may recall us telling you about earlier this month. We thought there may be a few of you out there who also think this movie sounds pretty genius so why not point you in the direction of a recent article from the LA Times’ Scriptland, in which the film’s 15-song soundtrack (also created by Apatow and Kasdan with the help of a variety of famous musical talents) is discussed at length? Unfortunately, you may not be able to read the article at the end of that link without the proper registration (give it a try, though), so below are some tasty excerpts.

"The movie charts the character's rise and fall and rise and fall that happens many, many times," says Kasdan, who is also directing the film. "He's addicted to pretty much everything you could possibly get addicted to, in and out of rehab, many, many children, and several wives.... It's an American epic."

After writing song titles and lyric fragments into the screenplay, Kasdan and Apatow reached out to musicians they admired who could use the script cues for songwriting inspiration. The brainstorming has resulted in songs like Cox's first huge hit, "Walk Hard"; a tune from his "dangerous period" called "Guilty as Charged" and songs from a protest album he turns out during his socially conscious political phase named "These Are My Issues."

As the song demos come in, Apatow, Kasdan and Reilly are tweaking and arranging them with Kasdan's usual composer, Mike Andrews ("Orange County," TV's "Freaks and Geeks"), to make sure they best fit both the character and Reilly's style. The songs aren't straight parodies in the Weird Al Yankovic vein, but "good songs that are funny within the context of the movie," Kasdan says. "Some of them are kind of jokey, and some are less jokey. For the purposes of the movie, we don't want the comedy to be dependent on listening to the lyrical content of the song line for line. It's got to work in a sequence."

Though Kasdan showed off his songwriting skills in his first film, "Zero Effect," which included star Bill Pullman performing two songs they had co-written, he and Apatow will not be performing on the "Walk Hard" soundtrack. "We both play really mediocre adolescent Jewish-boy-who-loved-Bob-Dylan, campfire-type guitar," Kasdan jokes. "We both know the same six chords."

Again, Head HERE for the full article. WALK HARD is slated for a 2008 release.

Extra Tidbit: Martin Chrenshaw, Dan Bern, Charlie Wadhams, Candy Butchers co-founder Mike Viola, and Van Dyke Parks, a legendary composer who’s collaborated with Randy Newman and Brian Wilson, are amongst the musical talent involved in WALK HARD’s soundtrack. Reilly will be doing his own singing on these songs.

This movie just keeps sounding better and funnier. Can't wait to see hoe this turns out! :D

This is quickly becoming my most anticipated FP film for '07....Can't friggen wait. I know it's going to be great.

So is this shooting before Step Brothers? I think Will is doing the basketball movie, John is doing this, then they reunite again for Step Brothers...Is that correct?

It's gonna be released in 2008. I think Semi-Pro is up first for Will, then Will and John do Step Brothers, and finally, riding on Step Brothers sucess, Walk Hard will release. I think that's how it's going but GOB will know for sure...

Shocked is an understatement. More like "extremely appalled, shocked, dismayed, and flabbergasted" all in one!
