Bonding over Dodgeball

This article about "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" talks about how the director, Ken Kwapis, got the four main actresses (Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera and Blake Lively) to bond and get into their characters.

The challenge, he said, was getting four young actresses who'd never met before to convincingly play lifelong friends.

And so, as a way of turning Blake, Amber, Alexis and America, respectively, into Bridget, Tibby, Lena and Carmen, Kwapis locked them in a room for an hour and a half.

"I told them that this was the last time they'd be alone together before the camera crew and the hair and makeup people came," he said.

He returned, 90 minutes later, and unlocked the door.

"But they chased me away," he said. "They just wanted to be together."

Once they'd broken the ice, Blake tells The Post, the girls were inseparable. "We ate together, we shopped, and we watched movies -- Harry Potter, 'The Stepford Wives' and 'Dodgeball.' We loved 'Dodgeball'!"

In fact, Kwapis says, the girls ad-libbed endlessly about the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn flick, and some of their jokes slipped into "Traveling Pants" ("Maybe someone can point out the references to me," he said, plaintively.)

"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" opens tomorrow.

Japanese Dodgeball Poster

Here's something else cool I found on ebay--a Japanese Dodgeball poster. I've seen others from different countries, but this has to be the most interesting by far. I love how Christine Taylor is right out in front. Quite intentional, I'm sure.

There are a whole bunch of the Wedding Crashers buttons on ebay right now. You can get just the three of either Vince or Owen, and also the set of six. I'm still waiting to see if they are going to make posters.

Edit: here's my answer to the poster question...vinyl banners, even better!

MTV Movie Awards

Sarah sent me a scan of an ad for the MTV Movie Awards. Check out the info on the bottom of the ad--Vince is "scheduled to appear!" Now I don't know if this means he's going to be a presenter or be in some taped bit, like in past years. But either way, we love it! Thank, Sarah for the scoop. Oh, and by the way, the show airs on June 9th, but will be taping this coming Saturday, June 4th at 5:30 PM at the Shrine Auditorium for all you red carpet watchers.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

For those of you wondering how significant Vince's role in Mr. and Mrs. Smith is...I read this over on the Dinner For Five forum:

"I saw the film (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) last night, and Vince's role is a lot larger than is made out to be. Though he's not billed at all on the one-sheet nor the front end credits, his role is the third largest, behind the Bradgelina--and in the role call roll, his name is listed third..."

From the L.A. Times

Here's an excerpt from an article about Mr and Mrs. Smith and director, Doug Liman:

"The picture was rewritten time and again. Sequences were shot with villains who were then dropped altogether; a comedic cameo by Vince Vaughn was considerably expanded. Vaughn says he was fine with his relatively brief experience on the film. Liman gave him a lot of freedom to improvise, he says, adding, 'He's so bright when it comes to the camera. His movies always look really, really good.'"

Wedding Crashers Premiere

So the rumor is that the Wedding Crashers premiere is going to be held in New York. Not sure of the date or location, but I will fill you in when I find out the details. If anyone out there can give me more info than New Line was able to, I would totally appreciate it." Cheers!

*I so need to rant right now, but I will hold it until later, perhaps on the forum.

crashersbanner4.jpg

Found these on JoBlo.com. From their site:

"From what I can tell, WEDDING CRASHERS is gonna be the funniest film around this summer. I know a few people who've seen the flick and they've raved about it and I know New Line is riding high with the test results they've gotten back. Vince Vaughn is really coming into his own as a leading guy and paired with Owen Wilson their chemistry (after all they are part of that Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, et. al. clique) this thing looks hilarious. Today at JoBlo.com we've got an exclusive look at four new theatrical banners for the film, which hits theaters on July 15. The URL for the film's official site, which you see at the bottom of these banners, has been updated as well with a bunch of new features including a fun "Quail Shoot" game. Enjoy!"

Oh, we're enjoying all right.

Hey Everybody...it's

contesttime.gif

Butterball suggested that we have a Caption Contest for the cutie Earmuffs Picture. I think that's an awesome idea, so let's see what you can come up with! The winner will be chosen by a not-yet-appointed judge and myself. And the big prize? A brand new 'Old School' t-shirt and shot glass! The shirt is a size medium and the shot glass is, well, shot glass size. ;p Add your caption to the comments of this post and you can enter as many as you like!

I am also having a drawing for one Complex magazine AND a really cool ballpoint pen that has a picture of Vince as Beanie (sorry, it's not really his body) that undresses when you tilt the pen. To be entered into the drawing, just register for the vince-vaughn.com forum by next Friday, June 3rd. If you're already a member of the forum and want to be included in the drawing, send me a private message by June 3rd!

Vince wants to bring moviemaking to Chicago

Article found here
Published May 15, 2005
By Terry Armour, Chicago Tribune

Actor Vince Vaughn rolls into town Tuesday to powwow with Mayor Richard Daley about the state of moviemaking in Chicago. We hear Vaughn, who grew up in Buffalo Grove, wants to establish a relationship with the city for a handful of productions he wants to bring to town, starting with "The Breakup," which begins shooting here June 20. That film, which also stars Jennifer Aniston, will showcase the Windy City as a tourist destination (Vaughn plays a tour guide on a double-decker bus).

This has to be one of the nicest pictures I've seen of Vince. Some new photos were added to Webshots galleries (using keyword: Vince Vaughn) in the last couple of days and a few of them are from when he attended the Final Four in April. Also, here's another one showing Vince in true form. (The guy in the brown jacket is Peyton Reed, who is directing "The Break-Up".)

You really have to weed through the photos on Webshots because there's a lot of random stuff there, but there are some great ones of Vince if you look carefully. I saw a couple of new ones from his Iraq trip, one from the Lake Forest High School Hall of Fame event, and even a couple where he's wearing a Lake Forest shirt. Go check 'em out!

More Summer (Vince) Movie Buzz...

Two small, but significant comments were made about Vince in CNN's summer movie review:

About Mr. and Mrs. Smith:
The film has been overshadowed of late by the alleged romance between its two stars -- both of whom deny a relationship -- but industry watchers still have high hopes. The director is Doug Liman, who had a big hit with "The Bourne Identity" in 2002, and previews have been promising. Besides, Vince Vaughn (who goes back with Liman to "Swingers") provides comic relief.

About Wedding Crashers:
In the midst of all the money thrown around in summer, there could be some sleepers. Bill Murray stars in the new Jim Jarmusch movie, "Broken Flowers"; Diane Lane and John Cusack team up in "Must Love Dogs"; and Owen Wilson and Vaughn (yes, he's also a popular man this summer) are "The Wedding Crashers."

MSNBC predicts 'Wedding Crashers' will be the Funniest Comedy of the Summer

"Buzz: This looks to be the funniest comedy of the summer. Vaughn, basically using his ’ÄúSwingers’Äù persona and Wilson (playing himself, as usual) are a great combination and it’Äôs easy to believe that many women would fall for their act (personally, I’Äôd have to go with Wilson)*. This is another product of the so-called Frat Pack (which also includes Ferrell and Ben Stiller). Dobkin is probably best known for directing 'Shanghai Knights.'"

May 15, 2005

Hey, we've known that Vince was going to make it big for a long time.

But it sure is great to hear others finally acknowledge it! The San Francisco Chronicle has this to say about Wedding Crashers and Vince in their Summer Movie Preview:

Wedding Crashers (New Line) Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play cynical divorce lawyers who pick up women at strangers' weddings for one-nighters. The cheap thrills suddenly get expensive when one cad meets a stalker and the other finds true love. Rachel McAdams ("The Notebook") co-stars as the smitten daughter of a frighteningly eccentric politician (Christopher Walken). "Shanghai Knights" director David Dobkin stages his second Owen Wilson buddy comedy, with James Carville and John McCain in cameos.

BUZZ: Is Vince Vaughn the next Will Ferrell? As they used to say in his breakout indie feature "Swingers," Vaughn is "money" because of his supporting roles in frat-pack hits, including "Old School," "Starsky & Hutch" and "Dodgeball." If "Wedding" delivers, Vaughn could join Ferrell, Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller as one of Hollywood's go-to leading men for comedies..

Mr. and Mrs. Smith Premiere

The Mr and Mrs. Smith premiere is being held on June 7 at Mann's Village Theatre in Westwood. This is where the Dodgeball premiere was held and it's a great place to watch the whole red carpet thing. I'm guessing Vince will be there, so if you're near LA, it might be fun to check it out.

Info found here. I'm sure they'll soon be announcing when and where the Wedding Crashers premiere is going to be, as well.

Checking in

So sorry about the lack of updates this week. I'll try and catch up on all of the Vince news...not that there was very much this week...a couple of pics on WireImage from the Maxim Magazine's Hot 100, lots of talk about Wedding Crashers, etc. But nothing major.

It was my birthday on Friday and I spent the whole weekend whooping it up with friends, family, etc. Went to a couple of amazing concerts, drank too way much alcohol, danced, caroused, and basically had the time of my life. I did have a somewhat Vince-related moment, however. After the concert on Friday we walked a few blocks over to the Velvet Margarita, one of Vince's supposed hangouts. I don't think he's a regular, but he has been spotted there quite a few times, most recently at Carmen Electra's Sauza Tequila party last week. (This article says Vince and Owen were also hosts of that party?) Anyway, it's a FABULOUS cantina, the decor is delightful, the tequila was flowing and much fun was had by all. Especially moi.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Full Trailer, Website, etc.

The full trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith has been released and there's more Vince in this one. Also, the website has finally been updated with lots of cool stuff.

mrmrssmith02.jpg

A reviewer on CanMag.com has this to say about the new trailer:

The final trailer for Mr and Mrs Smith is online now! Holy movie trailer Friday! We first get some new Star Wars, some new Dukes of Hazzard, and now this. How can a trailer go wrong when it shows comedy, tons of action, Vince Vaughn, and hot looks from Angelina Jolie? You're right, it can't!

The new trailer for Mr and Mrs Smith looks just as rad as the first trailers, and allows us to see even more comedy from the film. My favorite two parts is the 'couple squabble' and the hilarious remark by Vince Vaughn near the end of the trailer. Actually, I was forced to laugh quietly considering how late it is [12:45 AM].

As most of you have heard me say repeatedly about Mr and Mrs Smith, this film still gives me a True Lies [bought the DVD today] feel, but not nearly as much as the earlier trailers. In the end, this movie looks like one of the most fun action films of the summer.

On his physique after quitting smoking three months ago.

and on the VIP Scene page (celeb sightings):

Newsweek Summer Movie Preview Photos

Our hardworking friends the-frat-pack.com found a wonderful photo spread in the May 9 issue of Newsweek.

Also, here is an audio narration of the photos by Newsweek's Senior Photo Editor, Nicki Gostin. She had fun working with Vince and Owen and says this about Vince: "I don't he think acts, I think it's just him. He's like Mr. Swingers guy, winking at girls, calling everyone 'baby', etc." She says he and Owen have great chemistry and are great friends. She said that after the shoot they played ping-pong and are very competitive.

Nice find, Kevin!

Vince Vaughn Dodges a Ball and Leaps to the A-List

Article found here

By SHARON WAXMAN
The New York Times

LOS ANGELES
In Hollywood, when you're hot, you're hot. The hard part can be figuring out when that's going to happen.

Take Vince Vaughn, the 35-year-old actor who grabbed the public's attention with "Swingers" in 1996 but who has languished far, very far, from the A-list since then.

Not anymore. In January, Mr. Vaughn became the object of a bidding war when a romantic comedy that he was producing called "The Break-Up" went on the auction block. Universal bought the script - by two young writers hired by Mr. Vaughn - for $2.25 million, and paid him $12 million to star and produce. Mr. Vaughn's top fee was previously $3 million, his representatives and a studio executive said.

Suddenly, Vince Vaughn has become a bankable commodity. "I wouldn't accuse them of overpaying him," said Toby Emmerich, the president of production at New Line, referring to Universal's winning bid.

Asked if he would green-light a movie based on Mr. Vaughn's participation, Hutch Parker, the president of production at 20th Century Fox, recently said: "Yes, probably, presuming it's the right role. He's truly viable."

And then in early April, the director David O. Russell cast Mr. Vaughn as the lead in his next film, a comedy for Universal. Mr. Vaughn will play the wisecracking host of a radio call-in show who finds himself adopting the characteristics of his callers.

How does an actor go from lukewarm to red hot? In Mr. Vaughn's case, it's been years coming, with the nearest proximate cause the high-intensity buzz on "The Wedding Crashers," a comedy that co-stars Mr. Vaughn and Owen Wilson and will be released by New Line in July. Mr. Vaughn plays a gangly, obtuse but good-hearted divorce lawyer who hits on women at weddings. He proves to have a knack for physical comedy, using his large size (he's 6 feet 5) to mock his own clumsiness and playing the sensitive type against his particular brand of dark masculinity.

But Mr. Vaughn wasn't initially known as a comedian. After the success of "Swingers," Mr. Vaughn spent years concentrating on dramatic roles, cultivating a dangerous persona, whether as a serial killer in "Clay Pigeons" or as Norman Bates in the remake of "Psycho," both in 1998.

It was not until Mr. Vaughn began revisiting comedy, in roles in "Old School" in 2003 and in "Dodgeball" and "Starsky & Hutch" last year, that he started to attract attention again. With the surprise hit "Dodgeball," in which he starred with his friend Ben Stiller, Mr. Vaughn could lay claim to a bona fide success. At the same time, he took his career into his own hands by cultivating ""The Break-Up"."

"Comedy is what I was offered first and foremost," Mr. Vaughn said by phone from the Universal lot, where he was working on that film, which will also star Jennifer Aniston. "But I chose to shy away from that. In my na畏vet茜, I didn't want to get pigeonholed, but I didn't realize that probably not enough people had seen the film to even know who I was."

And when Hollywood executives took a chance on him, his forays as a leading man did not result in box-office success. "Psycho," for example, was a bust, taking in $21 million domestically.

"The Break-Up" is an "Odd Couple"-type story about a man and woman stuck living together as their relationship is ending. He sold it to a studio where it languished, so last year Mr. Vaughn reclaimed the pitch and recruited two novice writers, Jeremy Garelick and Jay Lavender. "I paid them nothing," Mr. Vaughn said. "I just said, 'Come to my house every day, we'll write the screenplay together.' " That gamble paid off handsomely with the script's auction, coinciding with growing interest in "The Wedding Crashers." A recent screening of that movie, organized by New Line to generate word-of-mouth, suggested that it was poised to become a hit. The room was packed and rocked with laughter.

"Vince is so likable, so sympathetic, there's a vulnerability to him," said David Dobkin, who directed Mr. Vaughn in "Clay Pigeons" and "The Wedding Crashers." "As a fan of Vince's, I'm always attracted to roles where he appears to be the kind of guy that maybe wouldn't have that vulnerability and turns out to have it."

Mr. Vaughn said he was more prepared for this round of Hollywood heat, having been there once. Born in Minneapolis, Mr. Vaughn moved here at 18 after landing a role in a national car commercial. He expected to be discovered but instead struggled for seven years as an unknown, until "Swingers" became a pop culture hit.

The cycle makes him cautious. "I don't want to come off as if I've accomplished anything yet," Mr. Vaughn said. "It feels ridiculous. What I'm most excited about really is the chance to be involved in what the story is, to have more control over the actual story unfolding."
