Thumbsucker review
By Roger Friedman
Review found here
So: It is not a foregone conclusion that Focus Features will buy Mike Mills' wonderful debut film, "Thumbsucker."
So said Mills to me last night when I ran into him and his agent at the big IFC Films party on Main Street in Park City.
"We've had a lot of interest, but people are afraid they don't know how to market it," he said.
"Thumbsucker," adapted from Walter Kirn's novel, is about a teenage boy who is so screwed up he's still sucking his thumb. This embarrasses the heck out of his parents, who finally try putting him on Ritalin after a diagnosis of attention-deficit disorder.
Alas, since he doesn't have ADD, the Ritalin acts as speed, which leads to a series of events that will change this young man's life.
"Thumbsucker" is funny, insightful, edgy and poignant. The performances are uniformly superb. If movies like "Garden State" and "Thirteen" found devoted audiences, then "Thumbsucker" is destined for cult status.
Accomplished actors Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Vince Vaughn, Benjamin Bratt and Keanu Reeves (the last in a daffy comic turn that recalls his early pre-action films) all make "Thumbsucker" a joy to watch.
But 19-year-old Lou Taylor Pucci absolutely shines. He makes the movie as essential as "Rushmore," "Igby Goes Down," "Roger Dodger" or any of the other recent great coming-of-age films. Pucci is likely to be awarded many times next winter as the breakthrough star of 2005.
But first the movie needs a distributor. Miramax? Fox Searchlight? Let's hope one of these classy studios steps up to the plate. Soon.

Was this not lifted right from Swingers, or what?
Found this via the Dinner For Five Message Board.
As I type this, Getty Images is uploading photos from the Thumbsucker premiere...still none of Vince. I'm not sure if he attended or not.* I can't wait to hear the reviews of the film.
*Update - my guess is that Vince didn't go. Wireimage also has some "Thumbsucker Portraits" up from earlier and there's no Vince.
This is the kind of thing that makes having this website so much fun. Jean Louise is a relatively new Vince fan and she is quite successful in finding interesting links relating to Vince, e.g., harder-to-find photos and stories, etc. Not the defamatory, paparazzi-ish, gossipy stuff, but things related to Vince's career as an actor. Which is what this site is all about.
So anyway, I received this email from Jean this morning:
Hey, ChristineĶIÄôve found something I consider to be very exciting; as IÄôve never seen or read about it anywhereĶbut obviously people in the ÄòindustryÄô must know about this guyĶ
Anyway, bear with me as I piece this together and attempt to give you the locations youÄôll need to go toĶ
I was doing a search on Vince, trying as usual to dig up Äòold stuffÄô on himĶnot the gossip crap thatÄôs out thereĶbut actual news¬Ýand I found this page.
After you open it, way down on pages 31-32 is information about a short film by George Spyros.¬ÝAt the end of the paragraph about him, youÄôll note that his ÄòRecent claim to fameÄîhe discovered actor Vince Vaughn.Äô
Naturally that got me excited!¬Ý So I did a search on George Spyros.¬ÝDidnÄôt find much.¬Ý But I did find this, which has a link about Mr. Spyros, Directing in DVD.¬ÝClick on that and it takes you to a story about him working for corporations.
In that article there is a link to Big City Productions, Mr. SpyrosÄôs company.
HereÄôs where it gets exciting!!!¬ÝOh I know that by now youÄôre probably just clicking away but I want to let you know how I found what I did, as itÄôs half the fun!¬ÝThe other have is sharing it with youĶ
I donÄôt have anymore links to provide.¬ÝYou have to click as you go. Click on the spot to open Big City Pictures, once itÄôs opened, click on the tallest (naturally because VV is so tall) building to open the Shorts and Features window.
Now look at the small black and white photo near the bottom!¬ÝItÄôs Vince!¬Ý HeÄôs 16!¬Ý Move your cursor over it and it will come up in a larger version which will then tell you all about a 16 mm film called Par King which starred 16 year old Vince Vaughn!
Whoo hoo!¬ÝSo, itÄôs true!¬ÝThis guy did in fact discover Vince!
Oh I enjoy this stuff so much more than finding out stupid gossip about him, donÄôt you? (No doubt about that, Jean!)
Have a great day, IÄôm off to search for more about Par King!¬Ý(= Parking?)¬Ý
Jean Louise
(And a little more info from Jean...)
This is the only other site I can find mention of this film, and Vince.
Nice work, Jean!
And if you can't wait for the prize, I've hidden the photo somewhere on the website. Remember, he was sixteen years old in the photo.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, National Lampoon's Blackball is being released on DVD February 15th. I also found out that it will be released February 11th in theaters in selected markets: Indianapolis, IN, Chicago, IL, Tucson, AZ, Little Rock, AR, Lansing, MI, and at the San Francisco Indie Fest on the 7th & 12th.
And! Here is the Official Website!

How about a close-up of Vince?
Just an early heads-up for anyone in the L.A. area...the Be Cool premiere is coming up...February 15, 6:30pm at Grauman's Chinese Theatre 6925 Hollywood Blvd, in Hollywood. Bring binoculars. ;-)
I just noticed that the full website for Be Cool is finally up. In addition to info about the movie, there are wallpapers, screensavers and icons to download and some great soundbytes to listen to. It's pretty nice.

And I love the photos of Vince as Raji so much that I'm going to use one on my main page for awhile. Gotta keep things fresh, ya know?

Vince Vaughn is clearly in demand. Beating out several studios in a protracted bidding war that lasted through much of the week, Universal has paid an estimated $2.25 million for the comedy spec ""The Break-Up"," with Vaughn attached to star and produce. Jeremy Garelick and Jay Lavender wrote the screenplay, whose details are being kept under wraps. It's based on an original idea by Vaughn, who will receive "story by" credit. Universal vice chairman of worldwide production Scott Stuber, who's socially friendly with Vaughn, secured the deal for the studio and also will oversee the project. Vaughn most recently starred in the 20th Century Fox hit "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." He next appears in MGM's "Get Shorty" sequel "Be Cool" and New Line Cinema's "The Wedding Crashers." Garelick and Lavender wrote the script for "Golden Tux," which sold to Dimension. Vaughn is represented by UTA, Eric Gold of Mosaic Media and attorney Debbie Klein. Garelick and Lavender are represented by WMA, Principato-Young and attorney Todd Rubenstein. (Liza Foreman and Borys Kit)

Also, don't forget that Paparazzi is out on DVD. I have no idea how long Vince's cameo is, but I've heard that it is in the first 20 minutes of the film. I'm sure I'll buy this eventually just for the Vince screen caps. Or not. I have yet to find a good review of this movie. :-/ I think the rule is that every actor is allowed two bad movies. But I don't think cameos count. Thank goodness for Vince. Sorry, Mel.
If you're a die-hard Vince fan, buy it so your collection is complete.
(Thanks, Vinz for the reminder! :-))

I have a confession to make. I really like Pauly Shore. So back when I heard that Vince has a cameo in Pauly's movie, Pauly Shore is Dead, I was like, all right!
I didn't catch the movie during its very limited run in theaters, but the DVD is going to be available on January 25th! If you want a sneak-peek, go watch the trailer on the official website. Vince looks amazing, as usual.
I've been doing a little research on the status of I Love Your Work. Every message board I've come across has people asking the same question: When will this picture will be released in the US? I finally decided to go straight to the source and emailed Cyan Pictures. This morning I got an answer from the CEO, Joshua Newman, directing me to this entry on Cyan's weblog explaining why there has been such a delay. Pretty interesting.
Hopefully, we won't have to wait much longer for this highly anticipated movie. Have any of you in other countries seen this movie? Did you like it?
Something else I found during my research...
Cyan Pictures hired well-known blogger, Helen Jane to cover the making of "I Love Your Work." They moved her to LA and she wrote a daily blog from the set. Unfortunately, the blog is no longer online, but I found some of the entries on webarchive.org. Also, if you read through helenjane.com's archives (starting with November 26,2002, you can find where she was hired on to what she calls "A job that is the unbelievablebestestly bestest job in the whole world." No doubt. Can you imagine being on the set of a movie every day and getting paid to blog about it? And a movie with Vince Vaughn? Oh my god. Helen Jane, you are a lucky, lucky girl.
Here is another article on Shift.com about Helen Jane's job promoting the movie.
Sarah on the VinceValiant Yahoo Group has informed us that Blackball is finally being released on DVD in the United States! I made the same mistake as she and bought the wrong one from Amazon a few months ago.
The correct one (with Vince!) will be released on February 15!
Thanks, SLN, for this hot tip!

What would I do without you fans sending me links and photos of Vince? Jean sent me these links from when Vince was promoting Dodgeball in Australia. My god, how adorable is Vince with Miss Universe, Jennifer Hawkins? And I'm sure he doesn't mind being called adorable, either.

Here's the link.
And while in Australia, he also appeared on a radio program called The Cage on 104.9 Triple M. My god, how adorable is Vince with Timbo? :P

You can listen to the broadcast here
Sorry if this is old news to some of you, but it sure brightened my morning! Thanks again, Jean!
Okay, that's all for tonight. Must sleep.
